Dealing with Grief during the Holidays
Since the holidays typically focus on the celebration of family traditions and togetherness, it can be an especially tough time for anyone suffering from the loss of a loved one. Whether it is a recent loss or one from the past, it can be difficult going through the occasion without that person by your side.
It is important to remember everyone processes grief in their own way and in their own time and that there is no “right” way to grieve, which in itself, can be a powerful first step toward healing. Along with the emotional upheaval, many people experience physical symptoms such as loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, headaches and a higher than normal risk for illness. Mentally, people may find they have a harder time concentrating or feel depressed and/or anxious. Moreover many of these symptoms are not just imagined as studies show grief can actually change brain chemicals and hormonal functioning causing the immune system to be compromised.
The Mayo Clinic explains understanding how grief affects you can be useful in navigating through the rough spots; and to help you find comfort in unexpected places as well as restore some of your emotional balance. They recommend talking to those close to you; and together, to try and find meaningful ways to remember the person during this time.
While it may be obvious, experts say to start by giving yourself the permission to grieve. The process should include things like sharing with family and friends the fun times and meaningful experiences you had with your loved one as well as looking at old photos and preparing some of their favorite foods.
Grief counselors say to be gentle with yourself and let your feelings guide you. Adopt healthy habits like getting enough sleep and eating well; and when you need, excuse yourself from group activities for some quiet, reflective time. If you feel you need more support, connect with others who are also going through the grieving process by joining a grief support group.
