6 Tips for Making Walking a Daily Habit
Walking is one of those simple pleasures that can brighten your day and boost your health at the same time. But let’s be honest—making it a daily habit can sometimes be easier said than done. Here in our community, we’ve turned walking into a fun and social activity that we all look forward to. Below are some tips to get you moving.
1. Start Small and Build Up
One of the best ways to make walking a habit is to start small. Set achievable goals that won’t overwhelm you. If you’re new to walking, begin with just 10 minutes a day and gradually increase your time as you feel more comfortable. In our community, we started with short strolls around the block, and now we have regular walkers who easily do a couple of miles!
2. Find a Walking Buddy
Everything is more fun with a friend, and walking is no exception. Find a walking buddy to join you on your daily strolls. Having someone to chat with makes the time fly by, and you’re more likely to stick to your routine when you know someone is counting on you. Our morning walks often turn into impromptu coffee dates, with lots of laughter and shared stories.
3. Make It Part of Your Routine
Incorporate walking into your daily routine so it becomes a natural part of your day. Whether it’s a morning walk to start your day or an evening stroll to unwind, consistency is key. Many residents in our assisted living Las Vegas community have found that walking before breakfast helps kick start their energy for the day.
4. Explore New Routes
Keep things interesting by changing your walking routes. Exploring different paths keeps you engaged and motivated. Plus, you might discover a lovely park, a new café, or a neighbor’s garden in full bloom. We like to mix things up with themed walks, like our “Flower Power” walk where we count how many different types of flowers we can find.
5. Track Your Progress
Use a pedometer or smartphone app to track your steps and progress. Seeing how far you’ve come can be incredibly motivating. Celebrate your milestones, whether it’s your first 1,000 steps or your 50th walk in a row. Some of our residents have friendly step-count competitions, which add a little extra motivation and excitement.
6. Make It Enjoyable
Remember, walking should be fun! Listen to your favorite music, podcast, or audiobook while you walk. Enjoy the sights and sounds around you, and take time to appreciate the fresh air and sunshine. I often find myself humming along to my favorite tunes as I enjoy the beautiful weather.
